A long-standing record fell Thursday night as Harrisburg High School senior Jamisen Green became the program’s all-time leading scorer in girls basketball during a home game against Carterville on Jan. 29.
Green entered the game needing 10 points to tie the record and 11 to break it. The previous mark of 2,067 career points was held by Laura Thompson, one of the most accomplished players in Harrisburg girls basketball history.
Green scored 14 points against Carterville, surpassing the record and securing her place at the top of the Bulldogs’ scoring list.
As the game progressed, the atmosphere inside the gym grew more electric. The Harrisburg High School band played throughout the night, fueling the crowd with school spirit. Each basket brought Green closer to the milestone, and anticipation built with every possession.
“I tried not to think about the number too much,” Green said. “I just wanted to play my game and help my team win. Once it happened, it was a really cool feeling.”
The significance of the night extended beyond the record itself. Thompson was also in attendance to witness the moment her record was broken.
Her presence highlighted the rich tradition of Harrisburg girls basketball and created a meaningful connection between generations of Bulldog players. With Thompson watching from the stands, Green’s record-breaking basket symbolized a passing of the torch within the program.
After the game, Green reflected on the support surrounding her during the historic moment.
“Having the band there and knowing Laura was in the stands meant a lot to me,” Green said. “I’ve looked up to the players who came before me, and breaking the record with everyone there cheering is something I’ll never forget.”
Green’s achievement is the result of years of dedication and consistency. Throughout her high school career, she has been a dependable scorer and a leader on the court, known for her composure under pressure and her ability to step up in key moments.
Coaches and teammates credit her work ethic and unselfish style of play as major factors in her success.
Breaking the all-time scoring record is an accomplishment few athletes achieve. For Green, the milestone represents years of hard work and commitment to Harrisburg basketball.
With the band playing, fans cheering and a former record holder watching from the stands, the night became more than just a game. It became a celebration of history, legacy and the future of the Bulldogs basketball program.
