Video games have changed dramatically over the years, but the question remains: Are the newest games really better than the classics of the late 1900s?
In my opinion, older video games were better than many of the newer titles released today. While modern games have impressive graphics and technology, classic games often felt like they had more care and effort put into them.
For example, “New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe” for the Nintendo Switch uses many of the same mechanics as earlier games in the New Super Mario Bros. series. The Koopalings return once again as world bosses, and the gameplay is very similar to previous titles.
The game also provides more assistance for players than older games did. It includes features that show players how to complete levels and offers characters that make the game easier to finish. Toadette has an exclusive power-up that makes gameplay simpler, while Nabbit is invulnerable to most enemies and cannot take damage except from falling into pits.
Older games, such as “Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels” on the Nintendo Entertainment System, did not offer as much help to players. While those games also reused some mechanics, that was often necessary because of the limited hardware at the time. Despite those limitations, many classic games were carefully designed to challenge players and create memorable experiences.
Other classic titles, such as “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Mega Man,” helped revive the video game industry in the late 1900s and became iconic franchises that are still recognized today.
Senior Parry Franks said he believes older games often had more passion behind them.
“I still feel like new games take a lot of effort,” Franks said. “They just don’t seem to have as much love put into them compared to the old games.”
Modern games certainly have the potential to be great, especially with today’s advanced technology and storytelling. However, creative graphics and complex plots cannot fully make up for game design that feels repetitive or uninspired.
For many players, the classics remain difficult to beat.
