The Harrisburg High School art department is preparing to showcase its work at the Cedarhurst High School Art Competition at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts.
In December, Harrisburg students submitted artwork for consideration in the annual competition. Out of 25 entries submitted by Harrisburg students, 13 pieces were accepted into the exhibition.
Art teacher Sarah DeNeal said she was pleased with the results.
“I felt there was a very good turnout for Harrisburg High School,” DeNeal said. “HHS has participated in the high school show at Cedarhurst for many years. In the past, we mainly attended the Scholastic Art Competition, but due to funding and location issues we shifted our focus to Cedarhurst.”
Harrisburg is one of 16 schools competing in the exhibition. Across the participating schools in southern and central Illinois, a total of 164 pieces of artwork were selected for the show.
The accepted pieces will be displayed during the opening reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts. The reception will run from 5 to 7 p.m., with awards scheduled to be announced at 6 p.m.
Student artists whose work was accepted into the exhibition will receive two guest tickets. The event is also open to the public, though additional guests must pay a $10 general admission fee.
Students whose artwork was selected will compete for 26 cash awards. Prizes range from $25 honorable mentions to a $200 Best of Show award.
Two-dimensional and three-dimensional works will be judged in separate categories. Third-place winners will receive $50, second-place winners $75 and first-place winners $100.
The largest award offered through the competition is the Cedarhurst Administrative Counselors Art Scholarship, a one-year $2,000 college scholarship available to graduating seniors in southern Illinois.
