The White Hats Club is very involved with our community. This holiday season, they are committed to doing more in our town. So far, they have delivered cookies to the First Responders and helped serve food at Heaven’s Kitchen.
At Heaven’s Kitchen, the members helped pass out meals to those in need. They got there at 4 pm and as people came in, they greeted them. The people that came to eat got drinks and waited for food to be served at five.
The menu for the night was a great meal to have for the Thanksgiving season. Attendees were served a chicken pot-pie, mac-and-cheese, and a roll. Many people thought the food was very good and were very friendly. After they finished their food, they were allowed to have one dessert.
Student volunteers went around seeing if anyone needed any refills or seconds. There was a very kind woman who thanked the volunteers for coming and “tipped” them with different pens. She told them that she loved making pens and gave them all different ones that she personally made. As the volunteers went around almost everyone was either saying “God bless you” or “Thank you.” White Hat members agreed that it was a great experience overall, especially interacting with the people.
Everyone waited patiently for their food with no complaints. Some volunteers carried on a conversation with the people waiting for their meal. After everyone was finished eating, the members had to pick up all of the trash left on the tables. They then had to clean off all tables and put all the chairs up.
It was a very meaningful experience for all the students that were involved. Senior Lily Cranmore says, “My favorite part of attending Heaven’s Kitchen was getting to talk and enjoy the company of everyone there! It was a great opportunity to meet with the community and put a foot forward in helping others.”
In previous years, White Hats and Key Club groups have completed service projects together, but this year they have separated in order to complete more projects. This year Mrs. DeVisser is the new sponsor for White Hats. Cranmore states, “There has been a few changes with Mrs. DeVisser, there are a lot more students involved in my opinion. The past year or two White Hats has been kind of overlooked, but it has been taken under the wing by Mrs. Devisser and she’s bringing it back to life!”
White Hats has started off to a great year and next they will be donating old blankets and towels to the Harrisburg Vet Clinic and Saline County Animal Shelter. Cranmore welcomes students to the club who like to get involved and make a difference. She says, “It’s a great way to be involved in our community and give back to those in need.”
