As the weather cools, it’s time for the HHS girls’ basketball team to prepare for another exciting season. After finishing last year with 22 wins, the Lady Bulldogs return two key starters: Kinzleigh Smothers and Jamisen Green. Both players were named to the Southern Illinois River to River All-Conference team last season.
Joining them this year are senior Hannah Jones and sophomore Koral Hathaway, whom were important reserves last season. Junior Hannah Rorer also returns to the roster this year. Seniors Kaylee King, Keeley Hines, and Cheyenne Street also return, ready to contribute to the team’s success.
The junior varsity team had a standout season last year, posting a 20-1 record, contributing to the program’s impressive overall mark of 42-11. The first two weeks of practice are always the toughest, as coaches work to get the team into “game shape.” The Lady Bulldogs practice at least six days a week in preparation for the upcoming season.
HHS will kick off the season on Nov. 19 at home against Gallatin County.
Jake Stewart returns for his 14th season as head coach. Last year, Stewart surpassed Chuck Ingram for the most wins in Lady Bulldog history, achieving the milestone in early December during a road win against Du Quoin. The program’s motto, PPEW, is central to the Lady Bulldogs’ success. The four letters stand for “Prepare, Practice, Execute, and Win.” The team prides itself on preparation, starting with extensive film study to prepare for upcoming opponents. Players then bring that knowledge to practice, focusing on execution to ensure they are ready to perform on game night. By following this approach, the Lady Bulldogs maximize their chances of success.
