Homecoming is a time for fun, music, celebration and dancing. These traditions mirror a huge national celebration held in New Orleans known as Mardi Gras. It makes sense that this year’s homecoming theme is modeled after this age old tradition that embodies all things loud and exciting.
This year’s theme is formally entitled: HHS Presents The Masquerade. It is a theme that encourages students and the community to deck out their floats and spirit week gear around the colors, sights and sounds of Mardi Gras. Sophomore class Vice President Gabby Dooley says the theme is one that developed in the first council meeting of the year. “Several members suggested the idea of a masquerade and everyone really liked it. Then the idea to combine it with Mardi Gras was brought up and it seemed like a good way to give the theme more focus” said Dooley.
The events of homecoming are open to all students, but several have differing opinions on what might be the best part. Junior Kishawn Lawrence says, “My favorite part of homecoming is doing all the activities that surround the theme, like Spirit Week.” Having a wide range of activities for the students to participate in allows just about everyone to find something they enjoy during the week. Lawrence continued by stating, “Even though I won’t be going to the dance this year, I will still help out with the parade and do all the Spirit Week activities.”
The events of homecoming include all of the traditional favorites this year. The parade will be held on Thursday afternoon and already has a great turn out of community support. Student council sponsor Krystal Wilson organizes the annual parade and loves to see all the different businesses participating in the tradition. “It is so much fun to register new businesses for the parade and see so many people in the community come together to support students” said Wilson. After the parade, students and the community are invited to the Mr. Bulldog competition and Bonfire at Taylor Field.
Weekend celebrations will end with the Bulldogs facing Massac County during the Friday night homecoming game. This game will feature the announcement of the 2024 Homecoming Queen at halftime along with a performance by the HHS Marching Bulldogs. The homecoming dance is scheduled for Saturday night, beginning with coronation of the HHS royalty.
